I’m scared to let my 3 big dogs out

@christian1488 Adults need to be responsible for their dogs and training is not a job you can do without them. Not sure how old you are but you sound pretty young. Aussies are really high energy dogs that can be a crazy handful if not properly trained and exercised. It’s so sad to me that you’re...

6 month puppy and irritating whining

@hrse2wtr Hire someone else. If you work with a trainer for more than 2-3 sessions and don’t see progress you have the wrong person. I wonder if you’re looking for permission to correct your dog for whining? Like I won’t think less of you for it but whining really isn’t one of those behaviors...

I’ve become a bad dog owner. They have become uncontrollable

@canuckgramz You need actual human help and not just internet advice - like actual additional hands. These could belong to a trainer you hire or a friend or family member that is willing to help. In the absence of another pair of hands you will need a lot of time. In the absence of that would...

6 month puppy and irritating whining

@hrse2wtr Yeah I’m getting the sense that something is wrong with how you’re approaching training and/or your relationship. I can’t say what it is since I can’t meet you and you’ve tried the suggestions provided. Sounds like it’s time to pony up the money for someone who can be there in person...

6 month puppy and irritating whining

@hrse2wtr Are you working on impulse control in general with him? Like waiting when you put his food down stay training leave it etc. learning that waiting gets you paid is a skill he might not have yet?

6 month puppy and irritating whining

@hrse2wtr Behaviors like whining are definitely going to increase in the post neuter period because he can’t exercise and play like normal and is probably sore. To some degree he might get better when he can do more again

Middle aged dog with separation anxiety, but we’re going on vacation

@mickey3375 Dogs who are not super social with other dogs can still be boarded happily and safely in the right place. The boarding facility we use (well, really is our last resort for such things but that’s another matter) even has separate activities for dogs who would prefer human staff...

I’m about to move across the US with my 6 y/o Beagle. What are some car and/or travel essentials that you would consider as must-haves?

@phydaux This! My vet is happy to prescribe nausea meds and even a sedative for long car rides. My pup went 10 hours last year and I was glad to have the nausea meds so I wouldn’t have to worry about him. We didn’t need the sedative but it was nice to have.

6 month puppy and irritating whining

@hrse2wtr How about his mental health? Is he sleeping enough (puppies often sleep 16h a day!) and getting breaks from stimulation? Is he doing rewarding activities like training for obedience or sport, using enrichment toys, playing and engaging with you? Does he have a predictable routine? I...

Do vets always sedate dogs for a chest x-ray?

@ernestcop My dog was TRAUMATIZED after an awake xr being held down by techs. I didn’t even know sedation was an option at the time because it wasn’t offered. Now we need sedation for all vet visits because he’s so terrified he panics and it becomes a dangerous situation (we’ve since changed...

    eCollars Save Lives

@leafar This. I love ecollar for my dog. But it is just a tool. It does not stop him it stims him. He still needs to stop and I need to understand the limits, risks and benefits of using this tool and taking him off leash. I need to assume those risks as his handler. This tool works for us but...

    Help choosing a pup

@louy51 Labs and poodles sound like a great fit! I would also really consider a rescue mixed breed since you don’t have any particular breed needs. Poodles are quieter but need more grooming (with a professional if possible) but labs are a bit louder. Both are biddable and can relax into a full...

Tips and advice to comfort a dog

@matthewades It depends on the dog Some dogs actually respond quite well to calm petting and talking, especially if they look to you in general in moments of discomfort like when interacting with other dogs or people. Some dogs find contact to be more arousing and do better in a covered crate...

    Warning grumble or “talking” grumble?

@wayofthepromise It sounds like there’s both warning and play here - like when they’re roughhousing and he makes the grumble it’s probably fake aggression. You can tell bc the dog will re-engage when your husband takes a break and there will be other ‘just kidding’ behaviors in between (like...

    Neutering/spaying

As far as living a place where we don’t have lots of excess dogs - we’re fortunate in some ways but unfortunate in others. It means we have a fair number of predatory private rescues bringing in dogs from other places to meet demand and frankly profit. It also means we have a problem managing...

    Neutering/spaying

@fionastone Whether it’s a conversation at all has everything to do with lifestyle. If your lifestyle is such that you cannot be completely sure there will be no accidental litters you have no business owning an intact dog. Period. That means no daycare, no boarding where there are other dogs...

    Neutering/spaying

@fionastone It depends on where you live. In my area of the US we actually don’t have a surplus of adoptable dogs and shelters frequently ‘import’ dogs from other states or even other countries. The ‘always spay/neuter’ campaign has worked, we did the thing. What that means is we are in a...

    Neutering/spaying

@lyndas The first question should be are you prepared to manage an intact dog? That means being 1000% sure your dog will not make an accidental litter. If the answer is no - just neuter the dog. As far as health goes, that’s a great thing to talk with your vet about risks and benefits. Since...

    Dog reverting potty training

@john1949 I would keep the walk time leashed for a while so it’s less enticing to not pay attention to you/there’s less to have fomo about. While I love watching dogs play together, that can be a high arousal activity that distracts the dog from her needs. Maybe go for a slow boring leash walk...

    Dog reverting potty training

@john1949 She’s probably very underexercised and is getting too distracted by the outdoor environment and then too distracted to potty. I think good long walks, especially the slow sniffy kind will help you immensely in making this possible for her. Make sure you have something really tasty with...
