Realistically, what will a behaviorist do that my regular vet cannot?

@joshuawithmartin Yeah we have 7 in the UK according to the site I just looked at. They are vets with the same qualifications as registered clinical behavioursts. They are going to be much more knowledgeable about medications though and it has to be better if the vet understands themself rather...

    Is BE the only option?

@wabj68 Dogs thinking they have to be on constant alert on walks are not as happy as dogs with clear boundries who know their owners can handle things. Note where I said "We dont punish fear responses". If a dog is displaying defensive aggression for no good reason instead of fear reactive...

I just found out that e-collars will be banned in the UK from February 2024

@imagebeastmarkbeast Vibration only collars will be allowed. In England bark collars and invisible fences too. Good luck stopping a dog chasing a sheep with vibration only though, mine ignores it for digging in the garden.

Help needed again- My friend’s GSD mix just attacked her 1 y/o son. She sees nothing wrong with this. Help?

@anadascal A level 4 bite from a GSD (multiple punctures, one at least half the depth of a canine, with lacerations from head shaking) on a 1 year old? How does he still have an arm attached?

    Is BE the only option?

@monk58 No they are not humans. Human children you can explain things to useing your verbal langauge skills that somthing is wrong. Then they can use their human brain to think about what you said. You can lecture your dog all day about ethics and they obviously wont have a clue what your...

    Most embarrassing moments? (funny)

@elizabeda777 Trying to teach my Husky recall years ago. He blew off my command, found some fox poop (really stinks if you've never smelt it) to roll in, then ran out of the park into the village shop doing laps of the centre aisle with everyone jumping out of his way to avoid getting covered in...

Banned from r/dogs (also wtf is my dog doing here?)

@vespersk98 This was filmed after a morning walk, she took herself to the crate and she had a nap right right after but I will keep that in mind. Don't want it becoming and OCD like thing.

Realistically, what will a behaviorist do that my regular vet cannot?

@fernando1999 Maybe its different in the US. Here they are specialists in explaining why a dog shows the behaviour it does and assessing dog body langauge ect. A vet would prescribe meds maybe based on what they said but the behaviourist usually can't unless they have been to vet school along...

    Is BE the only option?

@wabj68 No I am saying you dont just ignore the bad behavior. You tell them not to, if they carry on you prevent them from doing it. Seems pretty simple to me.

Banned from r/dogs (also wtf is my dog doing here?)

Its finally happened, a permaban for linking to aversive content. My crime? Reccomending a puppy book to someone asking for puppy books to read. Southend dog trainings puppy book. About the most aversive thing in there is saying don't let your puppy out of a crate when they whine (if you know...

    Is BE the only option?

@phyllis17 Is that Tom Davies training place? Seen alot of his videos on youtube, seems to know his stuff. I would try there if you can afford it. Personaly I found the positive only stuff made my dog more aggressive. Working breeds often need clear boundries. Not sure where all this dont punish...

Super Reactive in House, getting worse

@chinyereukoha Two things that really helped with my Mal barking at the window. 1)The nice way. I got her looking out at things she doesnt normally bark at and reward, while shes looking ask for a down or sit and another reward. I found it much easier to get her attention and make her sit/down...

What proportion of balanced trainers use bonkers?

@cj I have used one, very, very rarely. For any who dont know what one is it is something you throw at the dog to startle them as a punishment. They should not cause any pain at all but for some dogs they are still an incredibly powerfull punisher, worse than high lvl e collar stims or prong...

Neighbour accused me of not picking up dog poop and threatened to film me

@peacefan "Film away, its a public space do as you want. Not sure the police will appreciate the time wasting though. Have a good day."

Could a (vibrating and/or beeping) e-collar be used for positive reinforcement, similar to a clicker?

@johnc101 I use one of the tones on ours as a release marker to tell my dog she is allowed to move to come get her reward. I would use the vibration for negative reinforcment instead. They should already know the command well before you use the collar, its more for polishing what they already...

    R+ Vs. Balanced training

@graciousx It's not like I was hanging around looking to force my advice on anyone. The OP was actually asking is it worth trying a trainer who they heard sometimes uses prongs and e collars. I've seen a few of the guys videos on youtube and said yeah its worth a try. Things just escalated from...

    R+ Vs. Balanced training

@davecb Lol. The video you linked too happens to be the guy that was being asked about in the other sub. I wasnt going to mention names but that was too much of a coincidence not to.

I just found out that e-collars will be banned in the UK from February 2024

@youtwotoo Its a sad state of affairs when they'd rather kill a dog than admit the force free positive only approach might not be the best fit for them. On one of Jamies videos he says he approached the three biggest dog charities here and offered to train their next behavioural euthenaisa case...

    E-collar correction

@skilletboy No an e collar cannot kill a dog, they do not have enough power to cause burns or physical damage. They can mess them up mentally though. Maybe try it higher once incase its too low to have the desired effect at 25, but if it doesnt stop the behaviour straight away dont just keep...

I just found out that e-collars will be banned in the UK from February 2024

@teddy If your in the UK you can join the Association of Responsible Dog Owners here and get template e mails to send to your MP too. James Penrith runs it, he specialises in livestock avoidance training with e collars for sheep worrying dogs and really knows his stuff with them.
