soon to be 1 year old Dachshund

@godgivenwings https://www.reddit.com/r/DogFood/wiki/index/start/ https://www.reddit.com/r/DogFood/wiki/index/homemade It’s not recommended for most owners and won’t be cheaper to make it. I’d pick another science backed diet similar to RC but cheaper. Purina One, Beneful, Iams if you’re in...

Has anyone tried Sundays for Dogs dog food?

@joelp8 Glad it was helpful! Who are you hearing negative stuff from? There is currently a coordinated attack from a group of anti science anti vaccine folks - spearheaded by a nut job vet who wants to sell holistic supplements. We have a stickied post on it at the top of the sub when you sort...

@catholicdave Nobody is making broad, sweeping statements. Vets, folks with DVM degrees, are widely recommending exercising caution. Simply not understanding the mechanism is NOT a reason not to make cautionary consumer choices...

    Losing weight on Open Farm

@pogue72 I have anecdotally heard of this problem with both open farm and farmers dog. But it’s hard to know what else could be going on there or if it’s truly a food problem. You absolutely need a vet visit to check for underlying health issues and probably to discuss a science backed diet

Would love thoughts on food recommendations for 7 yo chi/terrier mix

@normaholt Food is not going to help with a very likely environmental allergy and your vet is absolutely right that your dog requires medication. I don’t know what things you’ve read by whom but apoquel is a very very safe medication many dogs are on successfully for life. You could also ask...

Acana Classics vs Royal Canin for puppy

@darren1980 The FDA sent out a half dozen warnings about DCM, and it WAS a bombshell. They specifically named Orijen and Acana. There are now 12 peer reviewed studies supporting a link between these diets and DCM. That's not a "heavy accusation" -- that's a strong body of peer reviewed evidence...

Acana Classics vs Royal Canin for puppy

@darren1980 Tracey Forfa is the Director of that body, and they don't say that exact thing because it's outside of their purveiw. The FDA isn't interested in regulating boutique dog foods out of existence, they're interested in ensuring animal feed facilities are modernized and sanitized...

    Homemade Dog Food Help

@rty778 You need to visit a board certified veterinary nutritionist or balance.it which is a website run by said experts. Please do not take internet advice for this, or you risk unbalancing the diet

Cherry eye in 8 y/o pug mix

@shadesofclear I've been through this, albeit with a slightly younger dog (he was four but has other health issues). My dog developed cherry eye soon after I got him, and multiple vets told me it was not an immediate issue, and that it wasn't a big deal at all except for my personal aethetics...

@catholicdave The science is quite advanced on this given that it’s only been five years. While it’s not clear why this is happening, it’s quite clear that diet is linked. There are twelve peer reviewed studies supporting a link. https://www.alltradesdvm.com/topics/diet-associated-dcm/dcm-qa

Has anyone tried Sundays for Dogs dog food?

@breannexo You’d be a lot better off picking a science backed senior diet This one is just fancy marketing with no expertise or research attached https://www.reddit.com/r/DogFood/wiki/index/start https://www.reddit.com/r/DogFood/wiki/index/homemade

Acana Classics vs Royal Canin for puppy

@nadines1 I wouldn't touch Acana after their response to the DCM issue. Instead of acknowledging and addressing the problem, they denied it and rushed "wholesome grains" formulas to market without ever addressing the poor formuation that likely caused the issue in the first place. The underlying...

    Hills Z/D GI Issues?

@sparkledust This is a lot more likely to be a coincidence than anything else. Always worth reaching out to your vet to document this stuff, as vets are often the first to notice patterns among large groups of dogs.

Chicken allergies & PPP shredded beef

@jasperr If your dog has a true chicken allergy then that one won't work. But chicken allergies are often misdiagnosed, especially in puppies -- and especially if the symptoms were GI-related. That could just be the formula that wasn't agreeing with her, not the protein source. So it probably...

    Transitioning between flavours

@maguse If your dog has a sensitive stomach you should really try to switch slowly between different formulas regardless of brand. Alternating everyday will work fine for some dogs and really not well for others. One other thing to consider is how long you're keeping open bags around if you have...

Hydrolized chicken ok for chicken allergy?

@govouv I think it’s a much lower number — a quarter to half of that max is what my vet derm says

@catholicdave You should speak to the vet but your best option is going to be a weigh management specific diet from a science backed brand. Higher fiber and protein options are good ones Pro plan, hills, and Royal Canin have excellent options...

Should I take my dog off Nutrisource Weight Management?

@amd358 Obviously everyone should consult their vet It doesn’t matter how slowly you get down to a quarter chicken breast, that volume is never going to be enough to fill your stomach or nutrient dense enough to provide what you need to thrive
