Had a really stressful day with dogs suddenly fighting

@hgodwinjr1968 I apologize for not reading this entire post, but wanted to point out that it takes weeks for a dog’s stress hormones to dissipate after a stressful or traumatic experienced. Adding another dog to the equation after a fight is a lot it ask. It changes the dynamics. Especially with...

    BE: Thank you

@andy11111 Just FYI, they don’t admit people who have not yet experienced BE to join. Conversation about the decision is upsetting to a lot of the people who post there. The forum is great, but it’s just not there to provide pre-BE support. They turned me off for other reasons, so I totally...

Has positive reinforcement for leash reactivity actually worked for anyone?

@lunabeam It has always worked to some degree. For one dog I adopted (the first reactive dog I'd trained) everything worked like a charm. I suspect that she was more situationally reactive from bad experiences in the city shelter and had adapted a defensive habit. It took a few months of...

@ramona78 Try going outside with him

10 y/o dog broke her humerus- struggling with what to do

@mudmixer It is so hard when you’re not there in person. My dogs have had all kinds of surgeries. The most serious was probably a mandiblectomy. Her lower jaw was removed on one side when she was about 17. I was so worried, but she was up and about, eating and drinking, within days. They don’t...

Dog bit 2 people. What do I do?

@hosee The management is not good. You’re using a shock collar. That causes aggression. Do you want the dog to be aggressive or not? I’m sure the dog is confided. I don’t know how the dog is biting through a fence, but it needs some reinforcement.

Realistically, what will a behaviorist do that my regular vet cannot?

@fernando1999 Yes, and they’ll take a more thorough history to understand what might help or hurt, and really stay on top of progress. General practice vets might have 4 or 5 go-to behavioral meds, but a VB has knowledge of hundreds of drugs and the subtle differences.

Bonded littermate has started attacking her sister at 5 y/o

@roovis I’d start with a neurologist and have a VBconsult.

Realistically, what will a behaviorist do that my regular vet cannot?

@fernando1999 A veterinary behaviorist (a veterinarian who specializes in behavioral medicine), is much more educated and experienced in veterinary medicine. It’s like going to a veterinary oncologist if your pet has cancer. That’s their specialty. General practice vets get little, if any...

9 month golden attacks me on walks

@outlawingrace Adolescent dogs are tough. Without seeing the behavior and body language, people here can only speculate. You do need an R+ trainer who can evaluate this in person. Perhaps the breeder will be willing to help you with the expense. Based on the onset of the behavior after the dog...

Another Dog Trainer Cautionary Tale: "North Reading dog dies at Connecticut training facility, trainer accused of scam."

@zonderzug You can truly never be cautious enough. I was familiar with a board and train trainer for years. I knew that she used aversives, but she seemed otherwise reasonable and conscientious. It turned out that she was stacking dogs in crates in her living room. They were left in their own...

    Neuter differences?

@shelly48 There’s often a lowered intensity of reactivity. Enough that can give you a window to train more easily.

Is your dog affecting your decision to have kids?

@dlmoodyfan Pain is such a common factor in behavioral issues. It’s so hard to not know how dogs are feeling. I fostered for small conservative rescues as well as massive, open-intake shelters with a “yes” policy toward all potential adopters. I understand the pressure on shelters to not deter...

Tips for helping my male reactive dog feel more comfortable around my father

@memberofthebodyofchrist Fearful dogs tend to be more fearful of men. There are a lot of theories about why that is (hormonal differences that dogs can smell, deeper voices, being physically larger, moving differently, having scarier posture, etc) and your dad can only change some of those...

Is your dog affecting your decision to have kids?

@dlmoodyfan Not me, personally, but that is something I've brought up with potential adopters of a couple dogs who should truly go to child-free homes. I said things to the effect of... "This is extremely personal, and I don't even want you to tell me the answer, but please discuss this with...

    7 month old gsd

@orthodox_christian Neutering will likely help a lot. He’s in the middle of hormone surging adolescence.

    7 month old gsd

@orthodox_christian Can you do most of your long walks at odd hours? Night and early am. Or drive somewhere to do them? Is he neutered yet?

    *trigger warning* considering BE

@gilcimarlp I’m sorry that you have to consider BE. I’ve been through a BE with a dog who was not at all human aggressive (dog reactive, but never bit), and I’ve lived successfully with a dog who could potentially be human aggressive, but never bit. I worked with veterinary behaviorists with...
