When to the local Pet Supplies Plus this morning and…

@knr80 Corporate is treating their groomers worse and worse. I just quit being the salon manager at a PetSmart, and the store manager's first move taking over the salon until they get a new manager was to force the only groomer left in there to do 8 dogs a day (she's only been grooming for...

To my bathers, how long does it take for u to wash a dog?

@emmliy I've learned time has literally nothing to do with quality. I had a bather in the salon I worked at who took probably 30-45 minutes for the bath alone on every single dog, and yet they still came out dirty because all she did that entire time was massage their backs and talk to them. One...

2 schnauzer incidents in the past 2 weeks! I’m beating myself up so hard. 🥲

@svjoyner My kryptonite is nicking matted paw pads. Luckily it's never happened bad enough that like I needed to apply pressure to stop bleeding or take them to the vet, but I feel bad whenever I see a little droplet of blood after getting the mat out. I'm sure their paws are already sore from...

    Andis eMERGE Clipper worth it?

@cmfsd From the specs sheet, it's 5oz heavier than Heiniger or Wahl cordless clippers, 30min less run time, and weaker overall because it's a rotary motor vs brushless. All while saving you like $30 compared to Wahl. Idk what Andis was thinking 🤷‍♀️

    Puppy Program?

@thejoshbro I want to eventually leave corporate and go solo once I feel like a good enough groomer, and I've thought of doing the same thing! There's lots of puppy mill dogs here, and it's also a low income community, so the two together also gives us a huge amount of 6-9mo old puppies getting...

Groomer trainee, not sure if I’m being treated unfairly

@yoshichicka Do you work for a corporation or a private salon? If you work for a corporation, you should contact your district level manager and confirm the steps to your training align with the company's outline for training. If you work private, find a new salon lmao. Which is also an answer...

    Hand stripping for dummies

@ashere There is a great handstripping Facebook group you can join! They help owners learn how to maintain their own dogs all the time. They can also help you determine the best routine for either a true breed standard or a "strip and clip".

How much would you charge for this beautiful boy?

@cazamal Based on his weight and coat type, I would charge $50. This is assuming his coat is in good condition and my general bathing process deshedded and detangled him. If I needed to do more work, then I charge at a rate of $50/hr in addition to the base price.

What upgrade should I make first?

@cinelife I have thinners. They're just 7" thinners. My main shears are the Loyalty Pet Products 7" starter set. I was thinking about splurging and trying the Geib Crystal Gold 8.5" thinners. That line is VG10 steel and I read that's way better?? Otherwise I was probably gonna go with Kenchiis...

    Favorite shears

@james24essex I have the loyalty pet products starter shear set. I love them. While my curves are not ambidextrous, current example photos of the set on both the website and Chewy (where I bought them) now show an ambidextrous curve. Idk how much I like foxy roxy. I got them as part of my...

Groomed 4 doodle-whatever yesterday and then 4 today!

@cement Her doodle may have been like 75% poodle, because it actually did just look like an oddly sized, poorly bred poodle. The coat was very poodle-like. She was new to us because she was so mad her last groomer "made her look like a poodle" (gave her a clean face). She conveniently did not...

Groomed 4 doodle-whatever yesterday and then 4 today!

@edenworkshops My very first day grooming alone and no longer apprenticing under another manager, I had 3 doodles in 1 afternoon 🥲. One of them, while surprisingly well behaved, was almost a year and a half old and never professionally groomed before. Mom was disappointed when I, in fact, could...

    Would you..

@mccra76 No thanks and that would possibly be a dog I would report to animal control

Stop coddling your dog! You're the problem, not them!!

@keonhanh OH MY GOD I WORKED IN RAINBOW CORNER TOO AT THE YMCA. The YMCA was my first job ever. EVERY DAY there was some type of complaint. "Why wasn't an attendant playing with my kid?" "Why is my kid's snack directly on the table?" (Idk maybe give your kid a fucking plate?) "Oh my god my kid...

What upgrade should I make first?

I'm making some tool upgrades this year. Mainly, I want to get a set of wide blades and some longer shears. Right now I just have a 7" set of shears. Both upgrades are to help speed up my big dog grooms. I have some longer ones from my PetSmart kit, but the thinners are terrible. So I just have...

    Alternatives to a slicker brush?

@unhingedflareon1111 Poodle coats are best maintained by frequent bathing and blow drying. Technique is also important. Just ripping through the coat is going to be painful to any dog, and you're going to damage the coat. If you don't line brush and don't know what that is, I'd recommend...

    Dumb, LONG vent

@childman Yeah my springer is a rescue of sorts. I took her away from my mom who was abusing her, so she comes with all the baggage a typical rescue does. She's line crossed, which automatically makes her poorly bred. I had met the breeder and the family of dogs with my mom when she got the...

Dog panics when I touch his feet, any advice?

@eatpraylove If it has already been determined by a vet that there is no medical reason for the behavior, then it honestly isn't your issue to fix. You see the dog for a few hours every 6 weeks. Otherwise, he is at home. You can't train him. He will not remember what he learned 6 weeks ago if...

    Dumb, LONG vent

@thematthew Yeah I love the idea of grooming cockers because I do have a soft spot for spaniels since I own one, but then I remember that grooming spaniels is miserable work and they are for some reason some of the most poorly taken care of dogs. Like sure every golden is obese and sits the...

Brush suggestions for at home bonding grooming (not a groomer - cross posted from r/dogs)

@codym Long pin slicker and a metal comb. Brush him like a human starting from the bottom and working towards the top of the hair shaft. Then check your work with a comb to make sure it can get down to the skin and through. Lightly spray him with detangler (such as tropiclean or skout's honor)...
