My dog is becoming overly needy and nasty with me

@mylife4his Try being as predictable in your routine as you can be. Do your hike at the same time every day, work at your computer at the same time every day. You can give a chew or toy filled with peanut butter when you start working to signal “this is calm time.” He’s in a new environment...

    Update!

@eve_marie That’s true in the sense that hitting and rolling the the shht finger poke that Cesar Milan does are seriously scary and often cause dogs to bite. Spray bottles aren’t as likely to cause biting, but they train through intimidation or fear or at best annoyance and that’s not building...

3 y/o beagle bit my face need some advice

@cblyles It sounds like you’ve fallen down the dominance training rabbit hole. Not letting him walk behind you and not letting him sleep on the bed does absolutely nothing at all. Nail trims are scary and sometimes painful. Your dog gave you warning that he was going to bite and you ignored...

    Update!

@icanspellthornwell Adding on to other good points, if your dog is really strong and you need a tool to help train your dog to stop pulling, a front attach or easy walk harness is the best option for a reactive dog. It’s working with physics instead of being aversive because half of the dog’s...

    Update!

@eve_marie Lol, no, not at all. A lot of dogs have heads that are narrower than the base of their neck. Greyhounds are a good example but my mutt is that way too and she’s not at all a greyhound. I’d have to tighten her collar to the point where it causes discomfort in order for her to not be...

    Update!

@eve_marie Both a flat collar and a martingale are uncomfortable on a dog that’s pulling because they both apply pressure to the neck, it’s just not a pressure that dogs tend to mind. But both collars will cause tissue trauma to the neck with a dog that pulls constantly. Because a martingale is...

Urgent advice please! Staying with family and my dog gets triggered by hyper child

@nafis4268 X-pen. Keeps your dog with you but with a barrier. Any pet store should have one. I’d also put a kennel in the x-pen so that he can hide if he wants. Find activities C can do that are acceptable when supervised, like give C your dog’s meal and have them toss the pieces in the x-pen...

How should I greet my dog when I get home?

@adriennelisa Ignore him while he’s excited. You can set a toy near the door and hand him that as you come in. Some dogs really like having something in their mouth when they greet people so teaching them to grab something appropriate helps. But other than that, only pay attention to the...

    AITA Grooming Edition?

@best99 As we are dealing with conjunctivitis secondary to grooming (according to the owner’s accusation), it’s not Graves’ disease or something obscure. It’s a reaction to the shampoo, a foreign body, or an infectious agent. Any conjunctivitis that could potentially be caused during grooming is...

    AITA Grooming Edition?

    @best99 That’s more than conjunctivitis.

Question about AAFCO recommendations and calcium contents in large breed dog food

@peterpeter If it’s denser in calories that probably means the fat content is higher, not that the food is more dense. Go based on the calcium recommendation for calories instead of dry matter because the calories determines how much food your dog needs. But the really important number with...

    AITA Grooming Edition?

@brileemoot You’re in the right. Plus the vet bill for conjunctivitis should not be high. It’s just an exam and antibiotics and a small charge to stain and look at the eye. I have never in my life encountered a vet clinic that bills clients by mail. They want the bill paid the day you bring the...

Is it bad etiquette to hang out at a dog park without a dog?

@mathewmark1988 That’s uncommon. Most places have only a handful of off leash dog areas if they have any.

Is it bad etiquette to hang out at a dog park without a dog?

@mathewmark1988 Dog parks are definitely not for everyone unless they’re clearly marked as multi-use. The dog park I go to is on private property and their insurance doesn’t allow children. There are behaviors that aren’t appropriate at a dog park like having a picnic, barbecuing meat, letting...

Looking for tips from other groomers who have dealt with Lagottos and their crazy owners…

@maysa I don’t know what to tell you anymore. Her curls separate down to the skin with no cultivation or maintenance. Her coat has had no cultivation in the 9 months since her last haircut and only baths and the occasional hygiene trim. I don’t let her coat go indefinitely because I live in...

Looking for tips from other groomers who have dealt with Lagottos and their crazy owners…

@maysa Here are better pictures in daylight. I suppose you could call them mats, I’m certainly not planning on combing them out. They’re a bit more like a puli or Komondor though in that they’re not going to form a pelt or get any bigger and they don’t pull on her skin because they’re lighter...

Looking for tips from other groomers who have dealt with Lagottos and their crazy owners…

@porthospathos Yep, they’re kind of just a dense fuzz. Nothing I’d personally want to de-mat but not impossible.

Can I get a refund from an animal hospital for the wrong assessment on an X-RAY?

@christmusicgirl1994 You can certainly ask for clarification and express your frustration (politely and patiently). See if they sent the x-ray out to a consulting radiologist. My local emergency clinic sends x-rays to IDEXX so if that happened there’d be a print-out of exactly what the...

Looking for tips from other groomers who have dealt with Lagottos and their crazy owners…

@porthospathos The breeder my lagotto comes from is a groomer. They do need to be groomed. If you want to go the no-brush route with a lagotto (which is fine to do, they don’t pelt or get heavy mats) then they need a 7-blade for their haircuts.

    oMg SHE’S so uGLy!! [rant]

@mssonya84 Yeah I’m wondering if it’s a doodle thing. Granted I do a 7-blade, not a 10-blade but when I shave my lagotto down she gets mistaken for a springer spaniel. She’s still a cute dog.
