Rainy day

How do you entertain your dog on rainy days?

I’ve had Dirk for 4-5 weeks. 14 month old 65 pound mutt. Most days I can walk him/play with him in the back yard for long stretches that somewhat tires him out.

On rainy days we can’t really do that because the cleanup is crazy. Then he gets a little crazy (and I probably get a little lazy on rainy days) and we can’t settle at night.

He does like bones, kongs, treats, and toys (for playtime), but isn’t particularly food/treat-motivated.

Any tips? Wiggle ball seems great but I’m pretty sure he thinks it’s possessed 🤣🤷🏻‍♂️

@mjwise I actually run around the apartment with her like a crazy person, luckily we have stairs, the kids/hubby will hold her and then when im “hiding “ they will release her and the fun begins… BUT my girl is a 11lbs maltipoo😂(also mutt), not a 65lbs big boy! So running around the apartment for 10 to 15 minutes every 2 to 3 hours is enough for her.
Also raining days are perfect for training time!

We hide snacks under blankets or in her bed. We have her smell them first, and then hide them! She loves that.
We started this when she was a pup, so that she could learn the find command. Also as a pup we did the sit, lay and paw training.. so we combine those in the play when it raining.

Im sure your boy will appreciate ANY attention and play time for sure!
Also a good time to teach him that rain is fun too and its ok to pee and poop while it’s drizzling/raining.

We made the mistake of not taking our girl out as a pup, then when we did, she didn’t like it at all!

Good luck to you!

@mjwise Hide and seek is good (especially if the dog is food motivated) I also toss one kibble at a time around the living room and my dog scrambles to find it. I do this before meals with maybe 20% of his dinner.

Also-- sometimes I just say to hell with it and let him get dirty. I give him a quick warm rinse when we get home then he runs around going bonkers for ten minutes

@mjwise We have a couple of places by us that offer indoor swimming and usually a good half hour of play with the pool tired our big guy out they have nice ramps for your dog to slowly enter the water and exit the water they have no slip mats all the way around the pool totally safe not necessarily a cheap date but definitely a good one for the dog he knows we're going there in about a mile away he starts coming unglued because he can't wait to get to that swimming pool and we have a German Shepherd by the way

@mjwise Teach him some tricks! My 2yr Doberman will come back from a 10km run with my partner and still be zooming around the house, but 20 minutes of obedience training and he’s tuckered out 😁

@mjwise Flirt poles for dogs are amazing! Outward hound makes a good one called the tail teaser that has a little furry squeaky toy at the end. The squeaky toys are replaceable and everything is on Amazon and the outward hound website too.

@mjwise Raincoat for the dog that covers the belly to prevent mud spatter. And trim the legs/paws so they dry easier.

It rains so often where I live that it’s actually unheard of to not walk your dog when it’s raining.

@mjwise yes, any kind of scentwork at home or snufflemats. smelling is necessary for them as well as exhausting. good indoor activity when my dog was younger in the winter. look locally to see if there are any indoor scent work courses or even dog training, like obedience and then rally. good to work on at home on rainy days. or in snowy climates.

@mjwise We do tug of war, fetch, wrestle, chase around the couch, running up and down the stairs, reinforcing the "Come" command from different areas in the house and rewarding.

Then there's enrichment activities like lick mats, snuffle mats, frozen meals, etc.
