Did we choose the wrong name for our puppy? (X-posted from r/namenerds)

@nikihawg So, my pup is named Tikvah, which is the Hebrew word for hope. Understandably, we would get a lot of strange looks when we would introduce her with her full name, so we started calling her Tika instead. They tend to accept that a lot easier, although I have had people mishear me and think her name was teacup :p Her proper name is still Tikvah, but Tika is the name she knows.

You could also say "This is Artemis, Arty for short." If you don't want people calling her Missy.

@nikihawg People will even question normal names. We named our dog Oliver and people are confused when we answer their "why?" with "uhhh... not sure really, we just liked the name"

@nikihawg My family dogs name is lucky. However we never called him that. He goes by Loli now and I'm not even sure that's even a name. We don't mind it tho and the only time he's every called lucky is at the vet. I don't think it really matters, just sometimes you find a name that better suits your dog after the fact!
