Hi! I’m hoping to get some judgement-free assistance regarding getting a puppy from a breeder for the first time

@chpjoe Dachshunds are a breed riddle with different diseases and there are many many back yard breeders in the breed. Some general guidelines to follow for looking at any breeder are: Do they show or do sport with their breeding dogs? Typically doing confirmation shows or sports and titling...

Advice/opinions on what i’m feeding my boy

@nekkoddd Yes same 3 companies. That’s a problem because it creates a conflict of interest. Of course a list of guidelines made for and funded by 3 companies is only going to allow 3 companies to fit its rules. Most people can see the issue with that but for some reason so many choose to be...

Protein need for a 6-year-old Labrador?

@colograndma Dogs are type of carnivore so more protein is ideal. However it’s important to look at the source. Protein should be coming from meat. Not peas, corn, etc. my lab eats a mixture of meat based kibble, and high quality raw and canned food. He is in great body condition and it has...

Hi! I’m hoping to get some judgement-free assistance regarding getting a puppy from a breeder for the first time

@chpjoe The AKC is not a relatable website to find a good breeder. http://www.dachshundclubofamerica.org/dca-breeder-directory/ Always use the breed clubs website to find a breeder. I’m not sure where you’re located but it’s likely you may have to travel some and/or have the puppy shipped to...

Lost with Dog Food selection (Dry) - 12mo Rescue (mixBreed) @55lbs

@nlu Do large breed puppy until age 1.5 or 2. Large breed dogs are not finished growing until age 1.5-2 depending on breed and your dog is considered a large breed. I would feed orijen if you have the money. Also wouldn’t hurt adding in canned food/raw/any fresh ingredients.

Dog hates Royal Canin - any recommendations?

@cm1989 Literally avoid anything by the big 3 companies, hills, purina, and mars. I second acana. They aren’t as top quality as orijen but they do have formulas without fish.

My dog ate Carna4 for about 4 months (review-ish)

@thuyhien So. So. Much plant material. The issue with using no meals is they order everything by weight pre cooking. Duck muscle is 75% water weight. After cooking it would most likely be at the bottom of the ingredient list. Meaning this food is primarily seeds, potatoes, and lentils and with...

Why are the ingredients in UK vs American dog food companies so different

@iambenn Different food standards. Also they list ingredients differently by different names, and by amounts in the UK.

Help with reduced appetite in puppy with prolonged heat

@guitar4721 Mix fresh foods in. Kibble is boring and shouldn’t be fed alone. Add wet, freeze dried raw, broths, pumpkin, plain Greek yogurt, etc.

Royal Canin food doesn’t have AAFCO statement about animal feeding tests?

@crissyhennacy Often times those feeding trials are a little more biased and misleading. I would look into how they are preformed and how these companies cherry pick results.

Dog food recommendation for older dog

@samsonrise You might look at fresh pet. It is refrigerated cooked type food. Or you can get with a vet nutritionalist on a balanced homemade diet for your dogs specific dietary needs.
