So are we LIMA or are we “bALaNceD”?

@christopherb ooh r/dogs is an interesting one given they have quite a similar stance and many more of those users over there use tools I think.

Sniffspot Survey Results: The State of Public Dog Parks Across The United States

@jackydocu Right?? I’m in this region too so that answer surprises me. I am wondering if maybe when the survey responders answered and were thinking of dog parks they were thinking of places like Fort Funston and Point Isabel - large off leash dog play areas with miles of different trails and...

Realistically, what will a behaviorist do that my regular vet cannot?

@sarahtoo I believe what OP might be referring to is different from “just” a behaviorist. Veterinary Behaviorists are veterinarians who are specialists in behavior and are the ones to reach out to about serious behavior issues that might benefit from medications, they’re also able to try and...

Sniffspot Survey Results: The State of Public Dog Parks Across The United States

@imagebeastmarkbeast Right? Mostly not surprising but very interesting to see the numbers. “This part did surprise me though: The Bay Area was a bright spot, however — none of the survey respondents there report feeling unsafe in off-leash parks.”

    Update!

@lisa613 We have never agreed with or supported the use of aversives (particularly for behavior modification) either, and have always had a LIMA stance, that has never changed, and certainly not due to another community.

    Update!

@christopherb Great question - I'm not sure as this isn't something we've discussed with them!

So are we LIMA or are we “bALaNceD”?

@autumn1123 I thought that there were some great comments and discussions on why the use of aversives is not a good idea and thought it was worth leaving those up for folks to find - yours is one of them actually!

So are we LIMA or are we “bALaNceD”?

@imagebeastmarkbeast Right? Yes it’s actually the opposite direction 😅

So are we LIMA or are we “bALaNceD”?

@imagebeastmarkbeast As far as I’m aware yes, they messaged us (with pretty much the same language as OP here…) saying that because we allow some discussion of tools and methods and don’t choose to delete everything, that they are actually recommends under the guise of discussion and we...

never thought i’d see the day

@kasimira I think the outings together in more open spaces sound like a great place to start building their relationship! Glad you guys have discovered an opportunity for this!

    Update!

@eve_marie A pinch collar is designed to be uncomfortable in order to function. I don’t think that discomfort was a priority in the martingale design - in fact I’d say by design and using fabric, the creators seem to have prioritized the opposite, and intent of design matters. You can mention...

[Link] New study: "Assisting Decision-Making on Age of Neutering for 35 Breeds of Dogs"

@etenczal What stood out to me is just how many say “choice.” With some of the conversations around altering and the newer fervor for keeping dogs intact you’d think it was catastrophic across the board. Also, I agree that the sex differences within the same breed are really interesting!

What are your "top 3" tips?

@breatheme Take breaks. Seriously! Find shared activities you and your dog enjoy doing together, even if they aren't the activities you thought you'd be doing originally. It will do you wonders for your mental health. as @childman mentioned, management is nothing to sneer at. Well executed...

Is fetch bad for our dogs too? Ffs

@pixeloriousspriteson Perhaps for some dogs it may harness the predatory sequence, but I'm not sure that's the case for all or even most reactive dogs. It probably depends on why or in what way your dog is reactive. I still play fetch with my dog on occasion but we have definitely changed up...

Reactive, anxious 6 month old Border Collie x 1/4 Cattle Dog starting Fluoxetine. How long does it take for it to work?

@theway2631 I believe 4-8 weeks is the typical given range for fluoxetine but this is definitely the sort of thing to ask your vet about. If they are unfamiliar themselves they can consult or refer you to a VB or behavior vet
