Help! When would my dog give birth ?

@amyser Get yourself the Myra Savant Harris books on Canine Reproduction (3 of them) so you are prepared. They will help you answer lots of these questions and prepare you for what can go wrong so you know when to go to the vet and how to help your b* tch through the whelping process. If you had...

    No Health Testing

@christiancharacter If you buy a puppy, you are perpetuating the problem. If she gives you a puppy that is different but as soon as you give $$$, you are saying you are OK with less than responsible, ethical breeding. Yes the puppies need homes but do not condone breeding without health testing...

What digestible form of calcium is safe for mama dogs?

@lumiere If you haven't read the r/dogs WIKI on Resposible breeders' I would start there so you know what you should be doing as a breeder: https://www.reddit.com/r/dogs/wiki/identifying_a_responsible_breeder/ I would also recommeend joing a local specialty club if you are interested in a...

What digestible form of calcium is safe for mama dogs?

@lumiere I use that during whelping as it gives a little calcium plus a sugar glucose boost. I also use a calcium paste during whelping as it give the needed boost of calcium to keep labor and contractions going. Not all my dogs like it though, most do but a have had 2 that didn't.

    Question for breeders

@beaub 10 days after whelping unless it is a toy breed. That is when as a breeder I feel I am out of the woods and that everything is going well and puppies are thriving. Unfortunately not all puppies survive as fading puppy syndrome is real. Probably 2 week if toy breeder. 3 weeks is too early...

Would it be bad to switch groomers to save a little money?

@jakefromsf She has paid her once and the groomer supplied 5 or 6 free services to acclimate the dog to grooming, she owes a few grooms. There is an implied understanding when a groomer works with your dog for free that you will use her for grooming when the puppy is old enough to be groomed.

Would it be bad to switch groomers to save a little money?

@normp You used free service so I think you should use the groomer a few times before you switch. I believe you owe that to her for the 5 to 6 times of desentization services she supplied.

For those on a budget, what dna test do y’all choose?

@marinaamz29 CKC as in Continental Kennel Club? or CKC as in Canadian Kennel Club. If Continental, you have a dog of questionable pedigree and should not breed him. The Embark panel is the cheapest part of health testing. Here's a link to see what health test your breed should have...

First time dane mom won’t eat or drink

@conningns I feed in the whelping box so the dams don't have to leave. I leave a bucket inside on a hook so the dams don't have to leave. And hold a water dish for them every time I check on them and the puppies until they drink out of the bucket. I feed them in the whelping box until they...

Need help with first time dog mama

@ashlyn111 Once eyes open, puppies are stronger more efficient nursers. Dams spend time away to replenish milk supply. Puppies drain them quickly. If they are gaining weight, no need for concern.

Ethical Breeding - Co-Own vs Guardian Homes

@lumiere That is very different than the doodle breeders. The doodle breeders typically charge half price, require MLM food and supplements bought through the breeder and up to 6 litters starting around 14 to 18 months. And they are doing it to avoid USDA regulations and state and local...

Ethical Breeding - Co-Own vs Guardian Homes

@klpotte3 Getting around the local, state and federal regulations makes it unethical as those rules were put in place to regulate breeders and dog owners. Sorry, full stop do not use guardian homes to get out of the regulations put in place to regulate breeding, it makes you a bad, irresponsible...

Pup is reading at 99.5F but she’s not due for at least another week… or is she?

@belovedgal Digital thermometers are all over the place for readings. I had an older one that when the dam reached 99.2 that was the temp drop. It stopped working and my next one was 98.8. My current one I think based on one dog is 99.4 and my problem was the thermometer I was using died (the...

    Puppy constipation

@lovinjesus Are you sure the dam is not doing so? Are they fussy? If fussy, I would reach out to your vet. If content and gaining weight, I might add a few drop mineral oil to the cotton balls I am using to stimulate. Your dam may be doing cleaning when you are not watching.
