When and how do you phase out the puppy pen?

Hi, we have a 6 months old Brittany mix that we rescued when he was 3 months.

We set up a puppy pen according to Simpawtico's videos and we removed the doggy toilet roughly 2 months ago and he had no accident since, he's fully potty & crate trained and goes in when we ask him.

His pen is 8 80x80cm panels and we removed 2 so he went from 2.56m² to 1.28m². Inside he has his transport crate where he sleeps in, his food/water bowls and his chew toys.

He stays in his pen during the morning and afternoon, we're taking him out at lunch time so he stays max 4 hours in a row inside his pen.

We're wondering how other people removed the pen, we were thinking of removing 2 other panels so he would have a square or 0.64m² (6.8ft²) and then put a bed in it.

@sun_shine1617 I think slowly increasing the amount of space he has will work fine. Remove those couple panels, and then if you have maybe a kitchen or laundry room that you could gate off that allows some more space. Assuming your ultimate goal is for him to freeroam; after that you could start with just short periods of giving him the full access he will have and phase out the gate all together.
