Need suggestions on dog clippers please! x-post from /r/pets

Just discovered this subreddit.

Need some help picking some clippers for my 2 dogs. I have a shih tzu and a mini poodle. They both have thick hair so I need something with power! I have some wahl from walmart, but they just suck bad and get hung up in the hair and wont cut. Plus those stupid plastic guard things are horrible. I did a lot of research and found that the most suggested brands are Andis and Oster. Checking online, I saw they were really expensive.

I do have some points built up on my citi card and can get any of the below. I know none of them really say pet groomers, but would any of these be ok? I usually like my dogs to have relatively close cuts. Thanks!

@michaelmutseyekwa With clippers, you absolutely get what you pay for, so yes, they're expensive.. but they'll last forever. I have friends who have been grooming professionally for years and have been using the same pair of Andis UltraEdges for 10 of 'em.

I can't offer good opinions on what you've posted because I've only used clippers geared towards equine/dog grooming. It looks like you're in the market to spend about $100 though, here's a few that are close:

I use these. Five or six dogs a day for three years and counting.. they're quiet, the body doesn't get hot and maintenance is eeeeasy. I also roach manes for a string of polo ponies and these guys do the job without a fuss. $150

I've known groomers that have used these for longer than I've been grooming. $120

A friend of mine won these in a drawing and has switched to the Oster camp. Usually Oster runs hotter and louder than Andis, requiring more maintenance, but the Outlaw's have changed her mind and she loves them. $160

Also, how long do you usually leave your dogs coat? I couldn't tell you what blade to pick up for human clippers but I can reference grooming gear all day long!

@michaelmutseyekwa I love my KM2 and Mini Arco... I would not recommend Oster as they have the reputation of overheating quickly. Only one person in my salon uses one and she has to switch blades/clippers frequently to avoid burning the dog.

Check out Petedge.com and get a 2 speed with metal comb attachments as well as blades (#30, #15, #10, #7, #5, #4 are very common).

Edit: I'm guessing you want to buy from Amazon... in that case I still recommend Petedge as a point of reference. :)

@michaelmutseyekwa Do you have a petsmart/petco near you? They have carpet samples on the walls that are a decent visual, just keep in mind they're thicker than dog fur (very important if you're dealing with pink skin).

Also, I use a #30 for my comb attachments and suggest a #10 for sanitary trims uf you plan on either.
