Dog with CHF, follow up Echo?

Hi,
So I have a 16 y/o daschund with well controlled CHF. He's currently on the same four meds he's been on for 2.5 years. Coughing is well controlled. I do not see the need to pay $900 for his yearly echo if he's stable. Can I just have the regular vet continue the scripts and follow up with the cardiologist as needed? Am I wrong? 2.5 years of this is 5.5k out of pocket to this point. And it's primarily due to these echo cardiograms. Do any of you avoid that and just treat symptoms with the regular vet?
