Cryptorchid Testes - should pet insurance cover this?

This is mostly a question for U.K. dog owners but any advice on this is very much appreciated. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck getting their pet insurance to cover surgery to remove cryptorchid testes?

My 7 mo border collie’s testes are both M.I.A and he needs quite extensive abdominal surgery to locate and remove them. My insurance company has told me that they won’t cover the surgery because it’s classed as preventative treatment, even though the cryptorchidism is a condition in its own right despite not yet causing symptoms. But if I left this condition untreated until my dog developed severe abdominal pain from contortion or maybe a tumour, my insurance would cover removal.

The surgery is going to be more than triple the cost of a normal neuter and even though we can just about afford it, I’m still rather peeved that I’m not able to claim for this after paying for pet insurance since the day I got my puppy.

Is this just how pet insurance works or have I picked a crappy company?
