Brush suggestions for at home bonding grooming (not a groomer - cross posted from r/dogs)

Does anyone else have a dog with that cashmere goat textured hair? My muppet mop dog is like a soft fluffy cloud, but his hair mats so easily. He is a rough faced pyrenean shepherd/Australian shepherd mix (he looks like a slightly larger extra fluffy Pyr Shep). He goes to a professional groomer monthly where he gets dematted and deep conditioning. He enjoys being brushed by a human hairbrush (which works... kind of), but hates being combed or brushed with a pin brush or a dematting brush. I'm looking for suggestions of a better brush for our at home use between grooms. He really enjoys being people brushed, it's just not very effective.

@codym Long pin slicker and a metal comb. Brush him like a human starting from the bottom and working towards the top of the hair shaft. Then check your work with a comb to make sure it can get down to the skin and through. Lightly spray him with detangler (such as tropiclean or skout's honor) to reduce static.

Human hair brushes, or other brushes with plastic nibs, are ineffective because they cannot get down to the skin and they create a lot of static. A great example of this is the doodle community. Many doodle owners believe their dog is brushed out because the ends of the fur are, but they don't realize they aren't getting down to the skin and the base of the fur is matted.

@codym At that length he needs effective daily brushing or it’ll get too tangly and matted to pull any brush through. If he likes a human hairbrush it probably doesn’t catch any of the tangles, which at any time past a day in between full brush outs, can get rather painful. Having the right pressure and technique takes time and videos (at least) or a groomer showing you for tolerable and effective brushing. But we tend to end up using some pricy equipment like chris christiansen slicker brushes (60-70 dollars) and artero fine toothed greyhound combs or just a greyhound comb to check with. The slicker is supposed to do the heavy work and the comb is to check your work. There are line brushing videos and the idea is to not cause brush burn from slickers. If it hurts, generally it won’t be a bonding activity or will become increasingly intolerable for anybody, hurting their relationship with being brushed at all long term.

@codym Get a long pin slicker brush and line brush them daily. They won't hate the brush and comb if you're using proper technique and not working through tangles or mats.
