Advice

Hey,

I have posted recently regarding my pup’s recent injury and vet visit. i was looking for advice as i feel i have no resources to gain insight.

my pup had a slip on July 4th weekend where his front legs sprawled wide and has had a bad limp since then. he screeched and whimpered immediately after, with a whimper every step for about a minute. since then no whimpering or evidence of pain besides a limp. i made a vet appointment and it took about a month to be able to get him in. for the time being, i kept him on crate rest, no rough play, and walks for toileting were on a leash. he’s a 7 month old pup so keeping him from trying to jump on and off the couch were tough but i did my best.

i took him to the vet and they did x rays and found no evidence of injury. the vet stated that he believes it’s panosteitis (pano) and it is a spontaneous painful diagnosis. i replied that this injury had a definite cause. the vet continued that it’s pano and wanted more crate rest and provided pain killers. it has been two months now and my puppy is still limping. i feel frustrated with my vet and am wondering if i am justified in seeking a new vet or specialist. my puppy is 7 months old and has had no contact with other dogs or had legitimate exercise since this injury.

is anyone able to offer advice? am i right in seeking out new professionals or does anyone have experience with injuries?

@marielovesk9 he had an x ray and nothing was noted to be an issue. i was thinking soft tissue. just upset that i was doing crate rest for a few weeks and that’s what i was told to keep doing although he is not improving whatsoever

@wonderingstranger Also soft tissue injuries should be checked, though probably hard to do now. I know my boy was walking on a broken acl tear titanium plate for 9 months because the vet didn't think there was anything wrong.

@wonderingstranger You need another opinion for a different vet.

My son went through two vets before finding a third who diagnosed Mega Esophagus for his dog. Just saying it sometimes takes more than one vet to determine a problem.

I would look for a vet that has more credentials than just a VDM. Or look for a vet who specializes in dog joint and soft tissue injuries.

@wonderingstranger I would keep trying to get in with another vet sooner. Be sure to let them know when the injury occured and all the symptoms from injury to now. Tell them everything you have done for your dog including all medications the dog has been on. Let them know you are very concerned due to the constant pain level the dog is experiencing.

Maybe that will light a fire under someone and get you and you pup in sooner.

@wonderingstranger I am happy to help. I have had to deal with enough human emergencies that I kinda know how to phrase things to get things moving. I don't see any difference when it is one of our dogs.

@wonderingstranger I do hope you and your boy see the vet soon. The waiting is hard I know. Meanwhile, lots of tender care and no jumping off anything and all walks on soft surface only. Good luck and I hope that there is nothing but a slight sprain at the worst.

@wonderingstranger My personal experience with Panosteitis is that it switched from one limb to another without cause. It started and ended completely out of no where. The limping improved with carprofen and gabapentin. The limping never persisted more than a week at a time, despite always coming back. My opinion, does not sound like what you’re looking at.
