Rescued a king shepherd need advice

@slocklr73 Take him to Doggy Daycare. Most places will give a free 3-4 hour trial run to make sure he is good with other dogs. Make sure he is updating on all shots including bordetella. He will come home beyond tired.

Is Arthritis common in ageing GSD (mix)

@wrg1405 Yes it is. In general it is more "common" in larger breeds but the GSD has a specific build that makes them more susceptible to it. Obviously check with your Vet, but my dogs get two of these each day with Breakfast. They seem to help.

@slocklr73 Does he like other dogs? Any aggression issues with others?

Rescued a king shepherd need advice

@slocklr73 Every dog is different, but I found one of three toys are usually a winner. Get a soft plastic ball that can squish down some but they can't fully get in their mouth. Try playing fetch with it. You're done when they are done. Get a plush dog toy they can shake and toss around. This...

Rescued a king shepherd need advice

@slocklr73 I am a Foster for a German Shepherd Rescue and anxiety issues come in all the time. Most just need consistency and to build trust. It takes at least 2-3 months but he needs the same day over and over for awhile. Physical affection also comes with time and trust. I had one that he...

@lwoods I agree, it would be but it isn't unheard of.

GSD - 1.5 years. Stopped using his legs. Completely bed ridden. Tests are all clean.

@argentwarrior Have them test him for DM. It is extremely rare in such a young dog but it isn't unheard of.

    DM Research Updates

@fl269fl269 Foster for a GSD Rescue here. We had a Hospice Foster that, on top of other issues including 3 forms of Cancer, had DM. DM was ultimately what took him. Boy was given 6-8 weeks when we got it. He was with us for 1 year, 6 months and 17 days. Boy did he show the Vet during his annual...

Ali wants outside at 0 F

@samantha91 She is warmer than you might think outside in this weather. However, she isn't adapted to it and doesn't understand her limits. The last thing you want is for her to be out there, decide she needs to come in but you're asleep and miss her call. Keep her inside and let her be upset if...

Ive had my rescue Gsd only a few days but I still haven't heard a bark, howl or really anything. He's around 1.5 years old we are guessing

@nikki225 That is how it should be. Our Rescue prefers to do the "Foster to Adopt" whenever medical bills are involved. Can't adopt a dog with tons of bills right off the bat. Glad it worked out.

@nikki225 I am sorry that was your first experience. Thank you for continuing to Foster and give other dogs a second chance.

Ive had my rescue Gsd only a few days but I still haven't heard a bark, howl or really anything. He's around 1.5 years old we are guessing

@nikki225 What you just described was 90% of the dogs the rescue I work with deals with. Most of our dogs come from Texas and the photos we get from the shelters are.....sad at best and horrific at worst. Unfortunately a lot of newish Fosters don't always know how to handle the dogs with issues...

@nikki225 Foster for a GSD Rescue here. With a Rescue, it's the rule of 3s. 3 Days to Decompress. 3 Weeks to start seeing their "personality". 3 months for them to feel they are in their "Forever Home" and feel safe. If he was ever a stray, being quiet is how you stay alive. He will start...
