What’s it really like being a dog groomer? The good and the bad

@daleviewrd I work off of 50% commission for a corp and am able to support myself pretty comfortably, in a relatively high COL area. I do anywhere from 5-7 dogs a day. It is entirely attainable.

What’s it really like being a dog groomer? The good and the bad

@sheiriam I make over that, yes. 30-40k a year isn't the average around here. Maybe it's regional, but to say that she's automatically going to make 20k less just isn't necessarily accurate.

What’s it really like being a dog groomer? The good and the bad

@sheiriam I was referring to you saying you won't make 60k, not that I made more than you. You said we don't get paid like that, and I was pointing out that you can get paid like that. Wasn't intending to sound condescending.

What’s it really like being a dog groomer? The good and the bad

@sheiriam I make more than that and don't own my own shop. Don't know where you're grooming, but that's unfortunate.

What’s it really like being a dog groomer? The good and the bad

@daleviewrd I started grooming in my mid 30s after getting my Master's degree and not being able to find a job with it and having something of a breakdown in the job I was in at the time knowing I needed to make a change. It's been the career I've stuck with the longest (almost 5 years now) and...

    Dog grooming help please!

@sarahbethcole You need to bring him to a professional to have him shaved. Matting is tricky and can pull skin up into it. If you're worried about his behavior talk to your vet about having a sedated groom. Dematting large portions of a dog is painful and not fair to the dog. I also don't...

What’s it really like being a dog groomer? The good and the bad

@daleviewrd When we say weirdos, it doesn't mean it's a bad thing. The animal industry in general just attract off-beat people. Most are perfectly lovely.

What’s it really like being a dog groomer? The good and the bad

@acecomando101 In the US it's usually not regulated, but I believe it goes by state. That said, I live in a state that loves regulation and there is zero in regards to grooming salons and doggy daycares.

Puppy walking in C shape since grooming

@johnbiggs Puppies who are shaved for their very first grooming experience generally react poorly to it. It's a ton of sensory overload for them and if the matting was really tight to the skin it can cause sensitivity. Also the very first time I did a full sani trim on one of my dogs she walked...

Private vs corporate grooming salon hours

@smileyface50 20 dogs in a day? You're being overworked. Some Petsmart salons are open til 9, but you don't come in at 7:45, you'd come in at like 1. I don't know about PSP or Petco now, Co used to be 7 or 8, but again....you wouldn't be there for over 12 hours.

Is it common to finish multiple grooms using mostly clippers/5 in 1?

@marysol There are definitely groomers out there who do this and there are clients who don't care, they just want the hair gone.

Is it common to finish multiple grooms using mostly clippers/5 in 1?

@marysol I just find scissors give a much nicer finish. There are also certain coats/lengths that I find I have to go back over with scissors to even out. The bulk of it is done with clippers.

Has an owner asked for a shave down that was necessary?

@evall Yes, I've had plenty of owners realize their dog was very matted and need a shave down. Not all owners are idiots, we just tend to vent about them here so it seems disproportionate.
