    Apartment-specific training tips

@athisfeet1234 Fair point with the fake grass. The use of the bell is interesting - do you keep it at a level the little one can reach or do you keep it high up so you trigger a 'going out time!' response when you ring it? I guess if I was a puppy I'd ring the bell all day long to get attention...

@bbcemt The emergency bag is a fantastic idea. I’ll totally keep this at the ready!! Thanks.

    Apartment-specific training tips

@mirxx Ok - I think ours will remain small, so carrying will remain an option for a few weeks. Yeah - this morning I was thinking pee pads might be the way to go, but I'm leaning towards pee pads for emergency situations (thunder and lightning?) but mostly grass on balcony + grass on afternoon...

    Apartment-specific training tips

@joy_of_the_lord Thank you - hope we get a puppy with high maturity and social consciousness like yours seems to have! It'd be great if we didn't have to wean them off the pad and it happened all on it's own.

@arewethereyet My DIY skills are pretty abysmal except for lego and IKEA furniture - I will try the Fresh Patch option for now and if things get expensive, I'll bite the bullet and make something.

@dizredux Wonderful - I should have known from your reddit handle you were going to be a proponent of boxes. ;) Cheers!

    Apartment-specific training tips

@dizredux I'll check that out as well. I'm kinda hoping to use the balcony tbh. It might get a bit stinky indoors.

    Apartment-specific training tips

@ardo Ok - this is great! I'm still torn between pee pads and grass but I feel I will have to transition at some point. But yes, absolutely - I will have a weather-eye out for discernible pre-pee behavior and try to time things for better analysis and prediction. Great advice - thanks.

@jayb05 Crikey that sounds awful! How does one clean? Like a machine wash?

    Apartment-specific training tips

@walkinfaith Netting sounds like a good idea, as long as I can get rid of sharp edges and make sure they remain fixed. I was also thinking of putting a playpen in the balcony itself (maybe 4' x 4') and just carry the little one to it and let them go about their business. Any suggestions on...

    Apartment-specific training tips

@bornagainbrian This is fantastic - thank you so much for your detailed reply. A lot of things you mentioned resonate strongly with us, especially the final paragraph! The second vaccination thing is useful too - it's hard enough socializing with COVID as it is; we certainly wouldn't want to...

    Apartment-specific training tips

@bornagainbrian Gotcha - yeah I'll look into it. Thank you for your time, my friend. Super helpful! Good luck with your mini cockapoo (the intelligence makes sense - those guys are sharp! my colleague has one).

    Apartment-specific training tips

@bornagainbrian Awesome - we might take the cue you seem to suggest in the penultimate paragraph and start with the balcony-pee-pad combo right from the get-go. I can sleep next to the crate initially and go to balcony when needed fairly easily - I just have to figure out how to make the balcony...

    Apartment-specific training tips

@elitewine4you We can at least for the first month. Then we can ease off to once a fortnight.

    Apartment-specific training tips

@barronkanetaylor Would once a fortnight be sufficient do you think? I’m thinking we can probably afford that for two months or so and then reduce frequency and take them out more.

    Apartment-specific training tips

@psuseagull Sod from Home Depot or sth would be super cheap, true. Plastic crate bottom would have to be cleaned often depending on density of grass I suppose, but yes this would be an option. Thanks!

    Apartment-specific training tips

Hello fellow Redditors, My wife and I need some pointers (doggy-joke alert). We are getting a new mini-American/mini-Aussie puppy (Aug 15). We live in a high-rise building so it takes a bit (say, 4-6 min) to go down and out into the nearby grassy areas. Also, this is a high dog-population area...
