[Fluff] Nearly ten years into having a dog, and I am still confounded by two things

@hazax11 For No. 1, pick up a copy of Alexandra Horowitz's Inside of a Dog. It's a great read and you will really enjoy it.

Play between rescue pups is getting increasingly frequent & aggressive. Advice?

@cottonpete You have the option of limiting the opportunities they have to play together and instead have them play individually with you. There are very good trainers out there who actually do not permit their dogs to play with each other and who instead play with the dogs. You can...

    Puppy Feeding Clarification Help

@beendaved The calculator I use suggests a range of calories between 300-600 calories/day. You'll notice it is a range … so you can adjust within that range depending on what your puppy seems to need. You want her to be enthusiastic about food, but you don't want her ravenous. She is growing...

    H E L P w/ scared/aggressive rescue German shepherd mix!

@christiansworldwideweb You are adopting a Project Dog who will take a lot of rehabilitation, training, and management. There is just no way to expect this dog to behave like a "normal" dog for some time, if ever (you need to keep your expectations in perspective). I'm sure a lot can be done...

@marina777 Well, in all fairness, no dog eats with quite the enthusiasm as a beagle :)

[HELP] 8 w/o boerboel not eating

@marina777 If he doesn't eat today, bring him back to the vet, specifically for this issue. A puppy that young should get very hungry very regularly, so you really want to be sure there is nothing physically wrong with him (parasites are not the only possible health concern).

[HELP] 8 w/o boerboel not eating

@marina777 What will he eat? I agree that he needs the calories. I would try to make them as balanced and healthy as possible. Canned food, either by itself or mixed with kibble, is a great choice if he will eat it. And don't overlook the appeal of working/playing for food. Some puppies who...

Overwhelmed - Just moved 8 month old puppy in with S.O. and 5-year-old girl. It's like she has forgotten almost all training

@123anna Welcome to canine adolescence. It is good practice for when your sweet kindergartner turns into a teen!

What tool to prevent mats for double-coated curly doodle?

@s3mp3rr3formanda Bring her in to a groomer and ask them to show you how to brush and what tools to use. Starting from a mat-free coat (the groomer may need to shave your dog, depending on its condition - but don't worry, it's only hair and will grow back ... faster than you'd imagine) will...

Are there any day-by-day training programs? (x-post from r/dogs)

@danicajav You might be interested in Morgan Spector's Clicker Training for Obedience. It's a very organized, step by step plan. Some people find it a dry read, but I think it's exceptionally well written and useful.

[Discussion] Puppies are expensive. Are you really ready for the cost?

@jewe6l0187 AND you can add $300+/month if you need a dog walker or puppy-sitting those first (several) months :)

[Discussion] Owning dog with 8 h work

@glendavidson I agree. That is too much dog-dog play and it can actually amp up some dogs. Good luck!

Expecting our first child with a child-reactive dog

@otherpsychotichalf Those a good certifications if you can also get references. Especially considering how many people out there have no certification and, frankly, no knowledge. Ask those trainers if you can contact clients they have worked with so you can get an idea of how helpful they have...

[Discussion] Owning dog with 8 h work

@truthandlove An adult, housetrained dog can last during an 8-hour work day without a problem. The problem comes when you have to work overtime or want to go out after work/socialize with friends, and he ends up being alone much longer. So, it depends on what you are willing to do to give him...

Expecting our first child with a child-reactive dog

@otherpsychotichalf You should hire skilled, qualified (with some certifications) behavioral help. This is too serious to cheap out on, so invest the money and the time toward having someone there to help you. Check out this site's Wiki on how to select a good trainer/behaviorist.
