Expecting our first child with a child-reactive dog

@bama_girl Unfortunately, not as many updates as I would like. I do plan to write another post when I feel I have more to update on. We hired a trainer but have only met with her once for an initial evaluation. It was really helpful though! She gave us a ton of exercises to work on with our...

@scuddly I posted an update post about 2 years ago, but there are some more recent updates replying to comments. Just sort by most recent:

Expecting our first child with a child-reactive dog

@bama_girl Oh! I forgot to add... using a gentle leader helped tremendously! Our dog doesn't really like it, but it makes us feel better knowing that worst case scenario, we have better control over his head. When we first used the gentle leader at the park, our dog was a little more...

Expecting our first child with a child-reactive dog

@keith841 Thank you and good job with your pup! It's really nice to hear these success stories. I do think our training will be similar to yours. If I can get my dog to coexist with our baby, that would be a huge success!

@slibhin We would definitely opt to hire a trainer before thinking about rehoming him.

@reinar Just read your edit. Thanks for sharing your story! I think separation is going to be key for a while.

Expecting our first child with a child-reactive dog

@reinar Unfortunately, I haven't found any treats that would get my dog to take his eyes of children if they were too close. That's why I've resorted to running away (with an excited tone like we're playing) since that breaks his focus. Also, I can't trust kids running towards us to not try to...

[Discussion] Trick of the Month February 2018 - Crawl!

@colwyn I'm really struggling with this one. I started off with having my dog lay down. He'll stay down to pick up treats as long as it is within reach, but as soon the treat is beyond reach, he will stand to pick it up. If I keep the treat in my hand and near the ground, he'll get frustrated...

Expecting our first child with a child-reactive dog

@imagebeastmarkbeast I've read up on BAT 2.0 a little. I forget why, but I ended up buying "Feisty Fido" after seeing it recommended here. Do you know if the two books are similar? I'll probably end up getting BAT 2.0 anyway since I see it referenced so often.

Expecting our first child with a child-reactive dog

@jedi4christ I've been researching trainers in our area and I was surprised at how few there were! After talking to a bunch, I had doubts that they would be able to teach us anything new. There is one trainer I am leaning towards who is CPDT-KA and CBCC-KA certified, but those certifications...

Expecting our first child with a child-reactive dog

Husband and I are expecting our first child in July. As the title says, we have a dog who is reactive to little children. You can read my first post on him here - pictures included. At the park, he has barked and lunged towards kids. We are working on training him to not be as reactive, but it's...
