level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@borisl I agree with your points. What are your thoughts on the fact that the dog usually snaps after he approaches people? Usually we let the dog decide whether or not to approach someone and most of the times he's snapped has been after he walked up to someone of his own volition. He walks up...

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@christian45 I'm sure there was likely a component of him feeling trapped. "B" was on the porch on the other side grilling burgers and then D was near the stairs. I think he also likely gave very subtle body language cues but these folks are not super animal savvy so they wouldn't have picked up...

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@psalms119 agreed, everyone present had been told NO HANDS and I'm really pissed that apparently they forgot this, because it should have been prevented. The dog can't handle hands coming towards his face at all, even under the chin scratches until he warms up to people. We have a pretty quiet...

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@ljubomir38 To be fair, I don't think this was completely intentional or malicious on the part of the rescue. They did mention some of the behaviors they had noticed but it was downplayed and we weren't told everything. Not sure if I'm really going to reach out to the rescue or not, since my...

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@davecb agree 100% with this. We own our property and have 5 acres in the country, so no worries about renting. And "D" is a family member who is actually being very gracious about this so he's not going to sue fortunately. But I agree the liability aspect is something I'm not sure my partner is...

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@gawain20 He is definitely not a people person dog and we knew that and were okay with it, but this is something beyond my comfort zone. We have livestock (steers, horses) and he kind of hangs out with them a little bit but he seems to lack the usual focus and drive that other LGDs have in terms...

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@giot yes, the rescue had made several indications that the dog maybe had some issues, but they were definitely down played. We were told he could be slow to warm up to people and might bark at them or he had growled at a vet tech and I actually was going to back out but I was pressured into it...

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@giot thank you, I agree. It was only 5-6 stitches this time, but the dog went from snapping to now biting, and if our precautions fail and there's a next time, it will only be worse. I really tried to emphasize to the rescue that I wanted an easy going dog, not a reactive or aggressive dog but...

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@bigmike424 We will definitely be working on muzzle training so we can get him to the vet safely. A few people have suggested medication but I'm not sure if that would help as much given that he only has issues sometimes? When it's just myself and my partner, he's very chill and sociable with...

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@ashnic101 I appreciate the concern! I'm okay. He's sort of taking it seriously but his approach is more like, well it happened and that's just how it is, guess we'll need to be more careful. But we were trying to be careful and this still happened.

@kabob agree completely! I couldn't believe it when I heard about that. But there's a lot about those two that is baffling.

@yankeebo his parents have a dog that tried to bite their grandchild in the face and they really didn't do much about that except sometimes they try to kennel the dog if kids are around so unfortunately that precedent has been set. I will look for that book, thank you!

@1godspace thank you, I'm trying to do the right thing

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@1godspace Definitely going to start with a behaviorist! I can usually tell when the dog is uncomfortable and I've been able to de-escalate introductions for him before but I wasn't present this time. I guess when I said no warning, I was just repeating what I was told by the people present. And...

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@alsu yeah, these are all things I'm worried about. I don't know if it's sunk in for my partner that we will likely not be able to go on a vacation again while the dog is alive because we can't have anyone watch the dog. And he won't be safe to go anywhere. And we'll have to be on high alert all...

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@kabob Thank you for the input, I am going to look into finding a behaviorist and maybe the rescue will let us foster the dog while they look for a more appropriate home? I feel like my partner is not really taking this very seriously and it's making me feel like I'm overreacting. But I feel...

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@imagebeastmarkbeast That would be my preference, I think sending him back to the rescue would just make things worse for him. That was an extremely stressful environment. But he has a bite history now and I feel like it will be very challenging to find him an appropriate home

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@nablusstar I agree we need help. Our adoption contract says that we should return the dog to the rescue if we can no longer maintain ownership or if the dog isn't working out. My partner thinks this would be a massive trauma for the dog, he was very unhappy and stressed at the rescue. My...

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

@cleoi dog definitely trusts us, he's a super sweet, goofy dog around us. But I 100% agree about taking more precautions, whether it's a muzzle or a large dog run outside. My biggest fear all along was having him bite someone so this has been a nightmare

level 4(?) bite, no warning. Need advice please

Our 2-3 year old, 90 lb rescue dog bit a visitor "D" last night. D held his hand out in greeting (he did not approach, just held his hand out) and our dog approached, sniffed, and then lunged and bit with no warning, visitor needed 5-6 stitches. The dog has met "D" before and was fine, relaxed...
