    Diabetic Dog Food Recommendations

@dirknowitzkifan9 Honestly, for this, you probably should talk to your vet. Be honest with them about the price being an issue. There might be other prescription diet options or they might be willing to help you with a transition after using the prescription for for just a short amount of time...

    Dry dog food advice

@steve73v There's nothing wrong with it, especially if a dog is used to it. Just make sure you're feeding the appropriate amount for your dog.

Switching from Hill’s Science Diet. Taste of the Wild or Fromms?

@imagebeastmarkbeast For the record, Purina One and Purina Pro Plan are the only formulas (not just in the Purina line, but of any dog food line) where every specific dry food formula has gone through feeding trials. As for picking a food solely based on the ingredient list:

Decided trying giving Taste of the Wild to my labrador, some clarifications?

@bonjala It does meet WSAVA guidelines because WSAVA doesn't talk about specific ingredients. I posted the questions above that you can look at. The WSAVA guidelines were developed years ago, well before we knew about nutritional DCM. You might expect it to show up in the FDA report, but the...

Switching from Hill’s Science Diet. Taste of the Wild or Fromms?

@imagebeastmarkbeast Purina One dry foods have all been through feeding trials and have more research backing them than Fromm. Here's even more information about the heart problems mentioned:

Decided trying giving Taste of the Wild to my labrador, some clarifications?

@bonjala This is part of the general recommendation to go with foods that meet WSAVA guidelines, as these foods are backed by more research testing, and have undergone feeding trials. That said, right now since we don't know exactly what's going on, the recommendation by Veterinary...

Zak George has started a whole series on training and dealing with a very reactive adolescent German Shepherd

@angelic_melody987 Those are exactly the same reasons I recommend him to families with kids. It keeps the kids interested and they actually get some good information out of it.

Decided trying giving Taste of the Wild to my labrador, some clarifications?

@bonjala Which is why you can contact the company about where the fish comes from. Whitefish is only treated with ethoxyquin if it was caught at sea and brought to land. Farmed whitefish isn't treated. Once again, contact the company about this. They will be able to give you the best...

Decided trying giving Taste of the Wild to my labrador, some clarifications?

@bonjala Only when the fish is coming to land by boat. Farmed fish doesn't need it. The FDA report states that it should be labeled. However, you could contact the companies about their fish source and use of preservatives. What does the guarantee analysis state? That's what you need to...

Decided trying giving Taste of the Wild to my labrador, some clarifications?

@bonjala I wanted to point this out first: "So a diet with chicken (70% water) as the first ingredient may have less actual chicken than a diet that has chicken meal (< 10% moisture) as the second or third ingredient."...

Switching from Hill’s Science Diet. Taste of the Wild or Fromms?

@dechen Personally, I'd put Purina, Royal Canin, Iams, and Eukanuba over Blue Buffalo. They're the companies that do extensive research, food trials and testing, and employ a higher number of certified nutritionists and food scientists.

Dog pukes. Might it be his food? What's a safe brand?

@cannie But you cannot tell the quality, digestibility, and bioavailavility from an ingredient list, so how would you be able to tell what's good and poor? How can you know that the way those ingredients go together ensures that a dog is able to take in and actually absorb everything they need?

    Food Advice

@warrior1 Veterinary Nutritionists can help you navigate the raw food options just like they do with dog owners. I can link the directory to DACVNs in the US, but if you're in another country I'd have to look at what's available there.

Dog pukes. Might it be his food? What's a safe brand?

@kam4031 Judging foods based on their ingredient lists is highly discouraged due to the fact that it doesn't provide you with important information.

Dog pukes. Might it be his food? What's a safe brand?

@kam4031 Can you please provide sources or more information on why you believe Purina is "the worst food on the market"? On a global level, many veterinary nutritionists and certified board nutritionists disagree - their guideline on choosing a food...

Switching from Hill’s Science Diet. Taste of the Wild or Fromms?

@konfused Dog Food Advisor is far from a credible source and the meaning behind those star ratings are all over the place. For example, Eukanuba Dog Food is given 3.5 stars but considered average, however Blue Buffalo Basics is given 3 stars but considered above-average. Beneful Dog food is...

Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind vs Hill’s Youthful Vitality?

@lyndam I've heard a lot of good things about Bright Minds from people who feed it. My senior dachshund is on Eukanuba senior and is doing great on it. In the past I've fed Purina ONE senior and thought it was great for my dogs.I don't have much experience with Youthful Vitaliy, so I can't...

Dog pukes. Might it be his food? What's a safe brand?

@kam4031 If you're unable to or don't want to provide actual sources could you at least explain why you believe Purina is the worst brand on the market? If you're going to make such bold statements on this sub you're going to be asked to support those statements with something - sources authored...

Dog pukes. Might it be his food? What's a safe brand?

@chosenforyou Here's some basic information, but you'll definitely want to check with your vet: https://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/digestive/c_dg_bilious_vomiting_syndrome Something else you could also do is pick a food with a lower kcal/cup ratio. The Purina ONE Healthy weight formula has a...

    9-Year-Old Mastiff/Rottweiler mix Food advice

@xajmaht1 I'd stick with one food - maybe go back to what he was originally on - and do as you said. Place it down, give him a certain amount of time to eat, pick it up, repeat next meal. Another option is to pick a food with lower kcal/cup than what he's been typically getting (you can...
