    Labor progression

@sandiebeach01 Pups can be too big for the birth canal. Or when there is a singleton pup, sometimes some of the hormones are insufficient to induce labor. If you see her in active labor, where she appears to have contractions or is pushing for more than half an hour, er vet visit is warranted...

    Labor progression

@sandiebeach01 Is she eating? Drinking? If you lightly squeeze her nipples is milk coming out? Generally, she will stop eating 12-24 hours in advance of Whelping. She frequently stops drinking 6-12 hours in advance. Milk can come in up to a week in advance but may also come in when labor...

Puppy weight calculators - how accurate are they?

@leona08 Thanks for the tag @sallama. In my experience, not very. My puppy Mochi was predicted by several websites to be 18 - 20 lbs fully grown. He is 36. With a recent litter in which we knew the exact birthday, we typed in the weight at a known date on 7 different weight chart estimators...

Puppy weight calculators - how accurate are they?

@leona08 I will also add that since you plan on keeping both that I suggest you research littermate syndrome. It is not guaranteed to develop, but can. You will want to make sure to train separately and have them spend lots of time bonding with family members separately to help minimize the risk...

[Discussion] Is it time to put my dog down? M[8]

@pcdirectuk One tool that can be used to help make the decision is the HHHHHMM Quality of Life scale. In your case, I might suggest that you run the numbers three times; once assuming the surgery is successful but he has the fecal incontinence, one for his current situation, one for the surgery...

Tried to schedule a behavior vet appointment…they said it’d be $900 for 1 office visit

@proguarda1 You can try to find a different veterinary behaviorist at https://www.dacvb.org/ . There may be others that are more affordable.

    My dog ate 7 grapes

@victorbell To my knowledge, there is currently no evidence to suggest green vs red grapes are safer.

    Whelping area

@principium I have raised rescue pups in crates before, another fairly cheap option is a plastic kiddie pool.

    Lowering dog’s urine pH?

@orion3003 ph 9 is basic not acidic. In dogs, urine should be between 7 and 7.5 https://www.merckvetmanual.com/pharmacology/systemic-pharmacotherapeutics-of-the-urinary-system/controlling-urine-ph Your doctor should be able to provide food options or medicine options to modify the pH.

    How to tell if pregnant

@metatronscube Ultrasound can detect as early as 22 days, but it is considered more reliable at 25-30 days. Radiographs (x-rays) can detect as early as 42 days, but is considered more reliable after 45-48 days.

    Dog Had Pups

@biblebeliever70 I am copy/pasting from a similar comment I made recently, so excuse minor inconsistencies. You will need a kitchen scale to weigh the pups. They should be gaining 5-10% daily for the first two weeks. You need to provide them a heat source. A heating blanket (that does not...

Ultrasound has puppies, X-ray showed nothing, done at the end of week 8!

@chiamoni My point is that the puppies may be less than 8 weeks,

Ultrasound has puppies, X-ray showed nothing, done at the end of week 8!

@chiamoni Ultrasound can detect pups as early as 22 days and will typically detect in the 22-28 day range. X-rays don’t detect until day 42 or so, with 45 being more reliable. Pups could just be younger than you think they are.

    Dog size difference question

@nizz If she is pregnant, she would be a little over half to just under two thirds of the way through the gestation period. Puppies would be detectable with an ultrasound but not with an x-ray. A Gravid-spay aka spay-abort is definitely possible at this point.

@dukedesu Hookworms and distemper. First of 3 litters that we would lose that year to distemper. 37 fosters died that year. Our previous worst had been 9. 40 in 9 months if we include December 2020. And right now is when the Facebook memories of Coco come up.

looking into dog breeding. i need to ask some questions about my situation

@whitneyahk Check out r/dogs wiki article on Identifying a Responsible Breeder. Then check our Prima Doberman's cost breakdown for reputable breeding (Note: Prima does cropping and prong training which I do not agree with). Also, here is Omal Malmute's cost breakdown. Then check out some of my...
