Zak George has started a whole series on training and dealing with a very reactive adolescent German Shepherd

@youcanjustcallmedory Agree. Exactly why I can't stand ZG training. Perfect puppies or 'silly' dogs don't require the type of training skills my dog does. I'll be checking out this new series though... I'm always open to free training!!

F the B that gave me and my dog a dirty look

@onguard Thanks. Same same. So much work!!

F the B that gave me and my dog a dirty look

@nikifor85 Thanks! I will admit I was on the other side before. Thought any dog that barks or lunges is a 'bad dog'. All I ever had was easy dogs. I mean realllly easy. All rescues. All from varying situations. I've never had/raised a puppy... All adult rescues and somehow, I just never knew.

@imagebeastmarkbeast Thank you. Tears welling. It's so hard!

F the B that gave me and my dog a dirty look

@blessedbygrace Thank you. No exaggerating, I spend my entire days thinking about how to 'train out' her reactvity. And we've made slow, but painstaking, progress. It's stressful on many days, but I love her. She was such a mess when we got her. Rescued from a hoarding situation. Progress has...

Is it just me... I don't "get" dog trainers

@davsunram Thank you for the support! The meds via our (very expensive) behaviorist have been the best solid investment in our training journey. We took pause after two trainers and then the suggestion of a behaviorist by her vet ultimately motivated us. We also started the basic/common meds...

Solo visit to Petsmart made me feel so much better

@habanero This reminded me of an encounter I cannot get out of my head. We were (purposefully) walking in a wide open space (church parking lot). Saw dogs coming from three directions so we retreat. As that happens, all three dogs react... badly. I only saw one of the three (the one making the...

F the B that gave me and my dog a dirty look

Just a rant. I know people experience way worse than dirty looks, but my dog did such a good job (well, for her) redirecting and coming across the street with me when the dog and her owner suddenly appeared. Yes. My 10lb loon toon got out a few viscous sounding barks. Yes. She got on her back...

Is it just me... I don't "get" dog trainers

@nadinepeony Hi! Maybe I used the wrong term with R+, but we've only used positive reinforcement trainers that came highly recommended. Mostly reactivity is what we've worked on, with limited to zero success/progress. The exception being figuring out the best med combo from her behaviorist...

Is it just me... I don't "get" dog trainers

@imagebeastmarkbeast I do believe the trainers we've worked with came with primarily positive intention, and as 'qualified' as any can be. I guess I'm just questioning whether I will ever be able to do what they do. Maybe because I guess I've decided being able to train a dog is the only way of...

Is it just me... I don't "get" dog trainers

@scrooge Thanks. It's honestly not about the money, although I live in a fairly inexpensive part of the Midwest. It's about, as you suggest, value. I'd gladly pay more. We do this unflinchingly for her behaviorist 🥰 Mine also has a chemical imbalance and verified trauma in her history. I...

Is it just me... I don't "get" dog trainers

@scrooge I feel like you're completely getting me. I feel like our trainers have been rude/dismissive... The first two being 'the best' in town, so many sources of recommendations pointed to these two... Vets, rescues, her dog walking company... All of our dog's "village" of trusted advisors...

Is it just me... I don't "get" dog trainers

@davsunram Thanks for the advice and support. I have read a lot of books on reactive dog training and also scour the internet for advice. I feel like I do all of the CARE steps pretty consistently and have been for nearly two years. After trainer 3 and Covid, I did it on my own, but a human in...

Is it just me... I don't "get" dog trainers

It's like they are speaking another language, as is my dog. I just dropped cash on another positive trainer, and I'm dumbfounded. I have tried 4 R+ trainers. I have no connection with these trainers and I can't grasp their communication styles. I'm also not impressed with how my dog is...

I know it’s a cliche but it gets better! (U just have to put in the work!)

@curiouswalrus You are not alone. Going into year two of daily positive reinforcement training for reactvity... Professional training and medication included, and she's only slightly better. She also has a laundry list of other fear/anxiety related behaviors that we manage, but are overwhelming...

I can’t wait to be able to join my dog at the vet’s office

@ronit Same here! My dog does much better at the vet without me there with her. Partly, I think she's too scared to be reactive, so she's shut down. While that's a bit sad, I've heard this from previous dog walkers as well... that she's not reactive to other dogs when they walk her. This was...
