@jssceckert I have had 4 labs, including a 14 week old puppy right now. I also work with dogs, and study dogs full time in undergrad. IMO, a lab would be the perfect pal for OP. Never had to do any sort of behavior modification for any of my dogs, and they have all been trained extremely easily...
